The Hobbit
"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit."
Those few words, scrawled on a blank sheet of paper while marking student papers,
would become one of the most read books of the 20th century.
First published in the UK in 1937 by Houghton Mifflin (the first US edition was published in 1938),
J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit has since been translated into more than 25 languages.
Synopsis
Whisked away from his comfortable, unambitious life in his hobbit-hole by Gandalf the
wizard and a company of dwarves, Bilbo Baggins finds himself caught up in a plot to
raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon.
